HOW IT ALL BEGAN

Accommodation

The Vanguards have always supported the Youth Hostels Association and the route was devised with hostellers particularly in mind.  In 1980 it was in theory possible to cover the whole route staying only at hostels, albeit with some long days’ walking, as there were three hostels within easy walking distance of the route - Crockham Hill, Blackboys and Alfriston – but unfortunately Crockham Hill closed in 1991.  The YHA relinquished control of Blackboys in 2006, but it continues as a hostel under private ownership.  So now it is probably necessary on some nights either to stay at hotels or guest-houses (of which there is a good selection nearby, as shown in the Vanguard Way Companion).
